We are thrilled to announce that our Youth Engagement Manager Abdu Abubakar, has been shortlisted as a finalist at Hull and East Yorkshire People in Business Awards, which will be held on Friday 4th July at The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel.

The awards night marks the sixth anniversary of the Hull and East Yorkshire People in Business Awards—a celebration of the outstanding achievements of individuals and teams across the business community. We are proud to see one of our staff members recognised as a finalist.

Abdu, who was previously named a Premier League Community Captain last year, has been recognised in the ‘Grit’ category for his remarkable journey and unwavering dedication.

A cherished member of the Tigers Trust team, Abdu began his journey as a participant, later volunteering over 200 hours to support others—helping peers overcome educational and language challenges and assisting in community sports sessions. Now a full-time team member for nearly five years, Abdu continues to make a lasting impact.

Originally from Eritrea, Abdu’s path to Hull was filled with challenges. Facing language barriers and social isolation, he found support and belonging through programmes such as International Kicks, which helped him develop his confidence and English language skills. Recognising his potential, Abdu became a mentor and translator, particularly for fellow refugees, and played a vital role in initiatives like the Premier League Kicks programme.

Throughout the pandemic, Abdu stood out for his tireless support of those struggling with loneliness and inactivity. His work to boost activity levels among young adults and ethnically diverse communities has led to thousands of programme attendances and stronger community engagement.

Abdu’s energy, compassion, and deep commitment to the mission of Tigers Trust have made him an exceptional role model. His warm personality and relentless drive to help others embody the values of the organisation.

Lorna Leach, Director of Community at the Tigers Trust, shared her pride in Abdu’s nomination:

"Everyone at Tigers Trust is absolutely thrilled to see Abdu honoured by the People in Business Awards. His journey with us has been nothing short of inspiring — from joining our International Kicks programme in 2016, to volunteering as a translator, earning coaching qualifications, working on our Active Through Football programme, and now proudly serving as our Youth Engagement Manager."

"Abdu truly embodies the heart and soul of Tigers Trust. His compassion, energy, and commitment shine through in every interaction. He goes above and beyond to create meaningful, inclusive experiences that resonate with people from all walks of life. Across Hull, Abdu is sparking new beginnings. We couldn’t be prouder of his recognition.”

Well Done Abdu, we wish you the very best of luck!
