Ahead of our October Football Centres taking place next month, we’re celebrating the inspiring journey of Willow, who joined several of our Kellogg’s Football Camps across the Summer.
For Willow, football was completely new to her, and walking into a camp full of boys and male coaches felt intimidating at first. She hung back on the sidelines, shy and unsure, watching as others threw themselves into drills and games.
Held every school holiday, the Tigers Trust Football Centres offer children aged 5–12 high-quality coaching, fun small-sided matches and, above all, a welcoming environment for all abilities.
Even in the early days of Willow attending, something sparked with a quiet determination to grow and connect with football. With each session, she began to push past her hesitation. The coaches played a key role in her transformation, offering encouragement, inclusive support, and constructive feedback that helped her build both skills and confidence.
As the weeks went on, Willow’s confidence blossomed. She began to engage more fully, supported by the friendships she formed and the positive atmosphere created by the coaches. The sense of belonging she found at the camps helped her step out of her shell and embrace the game.
Soon, Willow wasn’t just participating - she was thriving. Her excitement for each session grew, and her football skills improved dramatically. From dribbling and passing to teamwork and communication, she embraced every challenge with enthusiasm. Her growing confidence on the pitch began to shine through in other areas of her life as well.
Today, Willow regularly attends football camps and other sports programmes beyond those initial sessions. She’s become a role model for other young girls who may feel unsure about joining in. Her journey is a powerful reminder that with the right support and a little courage, anyone can step out of their comfort zone and discover what they’re truly capable of.
Willow’s mum, Hannah, shared this reflection on her daughter’s experience:
“My daughter, Willow, attended two weeks of football camps over the summer holidays. At first, I was hesitant about sending her because she was one of the youngest participants and didn’t know anyone. Although Willow takes part in a weekly football session for just 45 minutes, I was worried about how she would manage the longer camp days.
Initially, Willow was shy and reserved, clinging to me on the first day. However, as the days went by, she became increasingly excited to return. Her confidence grew, and her football skills improved significantly. She even handled the days when she was the only girl with ease. The staff were attentive, adaptable, and extremely friendly, making Willow’s first football experience a very positive one.”
Well done Willow, you should be proud of yourself and how far you have come!
