This week is Loneliness Awareness Week 2020, the Trust were delighted to hear that one of our walking football participants, Paul Bryan, had been recognised for his efforts to support others and help tackle loneliness during this time by the Lord Lieutenant on behalf of her Majesty the Queen.

Paul first started attending the Tigers Trust walking football sessions in September 2017, joining the Senior Tigers (a group of volunteers which is committed to maintaining the history and memories of Hull City) a short time after. Paul's role within the Senior Tigers is to be responsible for looking into members well being.

In his own words, Paul said:

“Once Covid-19 struck, it was obvious to me that there was a real wellbeing job to do now. I asked our wonderful treasurer Barbara Wilkinson for a list of members names and phone numbers all 260 of them. In early April I started ringing them to check if they were ok. The majority were fine, and I enjoyed many a chat with the members. I was stuck by their cheerfulness and their determination to see this through. No one moaned or felt sorry for themselves, but nevertheless several members needed support and with the help of fellow committee members this was given.

The whole process was repeated in early May and June again for the majority all was well, but many members missed their football and longed for a restart when safe to do so. I have made over 550 phone calls and to my amazement and surprise I received a letter of commendation from The Lord Lieutenant on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen thanking me for my efforts at this difficult time. I can't help thinking that it is the frontline workers who deserve this rather than someone who sits at home using a phone, but I am humbled and grateful all the same. I think it reflects on the efforts of all the Senior Tigers committee for the amazing work they do for the benefit of the members and for love of their team Hull City.”

Tigers Trust Kicks officer, Ellie Tanser commented:

“We are extremely proud of Paul and the work he has been doing throughout lockdown. He has given up so many hours of his time, to ensure the welfare of others, at what is quite a concerning time for everyone and that really shows you what type of person Paul is. It is brilliant to see that all his voluntary work with the Senior Tigers has been recognised. He is hugely valued by the Trust and his fellow walking footballers. Keep up the good work Paul! We look forward to seeing you back at the Arena when sessions can resume"

We hope to be welcoming the team back to the Arena soon and the group is always open for new players to join. Our Walking Football programme is a great way to tackle loneliness and keep active, for more information please email [email protected]
