Last Friday, we were thrilled to take participants from our Street Soccer Academy programme to Leicester City’s Training Ground for the Street Soccer Academy National Cup. They joined seventeen other groups representing clubs and CCOs from across the country.
The Street Soccer Academy programme is designed for 18 to 30-year-olds who are currently experiencing homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless, such as ex-young offenders, the long-term unemployed, and NEETs (Not in Education, Employment, or Training).
The programme's aim is to motivate participants to improve their lifestyles and enhance communities nationwide. By empowering participants to believe in themselves, building confidence, improving mental and physical health, and encouraging positive action, the programme helps young people achieve their goals both on and off the pitch and inspires others to do the same.
Our talented participants, representing Hull City and the Tigers Trust, competed in Group B against Crystal Palace Team A, Bournemouth, Salford City, and Everton Team A.
Our tournament began with a narrow 1-1 draw against Salford City. The team then gained confidence, winning against Chelsea 2-0 and Bournemouth 2-1, drawing against Crystal Palace 1-1, and losing just one game to Everton Team A, 3-1.
Despite only one defeat in the group stage, our team was unfortunate not to progress to the knockout stages, finishing second in the group with eight points. Nevertheless, they made everyone at the Tigers Trust and Hull City very proud.
As the knockout stages progressed, Everton Team A, from our group, beat Everton Team B in the final 3-0, winning the Street Soccer Academy National Cup. Our own Rhys Jones finished eighth in the goalscoring charts with four goals.
It was fantastic to see everyone participating in the tournament, showcasing the physical and mental skills they developed during the course. Each team should be proud of making it such a fantastic event.
