Hello guest

This week marks #NationalApprenticeshipWeek, we took the opportunity to ask our team of apprentices some questions for a short Q & A session. Today it's Ollie's turn to share his thoughts!

First up, tell us a little bit about you

Hi, I’m Ollie and I’ve been working at the Tigers Trust for over 2 years now. When I started at the Trust I didn’t have a lot of experience in sports coaching as I had different sports qualifications but I hadn’t applied it in a coaching environment. When I first started, I was very nervous especially when coaching for the first time. Other Tigers Trust staff helped me to feel more comfortable which led to me coaching with a lot more confidence. Now in my third year, I go out and deliver in schools by myself and I have a lot more responsibility in other parts of my role as a sports coach.

What do you love about sports coaching?

I love a lot of different aspects of sports coaching, but one of my favourite parts is the sense of changing young peoples feelings towards sport. I love staff putting fun sessions on for different age groups and showing that PE can be fun and it’s not all about dribbling a ball in and out of cones. Seeing the enjoyment on their face and the excitement they have at the end of the session makes my day.

What’s your dream role in the future?

My dream role in the future is to be working as a full time primary stars coach as well as coaching part time for the Hull City Academy as coaching has become a passion of mine.

What has your highlight of your apprenticeship been?

I have had a lot of different experiences when working as an apprentice for Tigers Trust which can all be my favourite highlight. One of them is when I travelled down to London to go on The One Show performing a live performance as Roary, this was one of the best experiences as I had never travelled anywhere by myself before. I have also had the opportunity to run the match ball assistants for Hull City match days, which has been a great experience being able to be involved with the Club on their match days.

Any advice for young people that are considering an apprenticeship?

My advice for young people looking to go into an apprenticeship, is to look for something you enjoy as a hobby as there is an apprenticeship for nearly every job you can think of. My Tigers Trust apprenticeship wasn’t my first apprenticeship as before I joined the Trust I worked in the I.T industry because I was good at it, I ended up not enjoying it. But sports coaching has always been an ambition of mine so now that I’m in the sports coaching industry, I love going to work everyday to learn new skills and getting the opportunity to always gain new qualifications which I can use for life.

Across 2021, we're looking forward to being able to offer a variety of positions to young people as part of the Kickstart Scheme. You can apply for these through the local job centre. Contact us more information on our Kickstart scheme.

Future apprenticeship opportunities will always be posted on our social media platforms and our Careers and Opportunities website page.
