Kalem Bennett, a University of South Wales student studying at the Tigers Trust, will proudly raise funds to support the Tigers Trust by taking part in a virtual London Marathon in East Park, Hull on Sunday 27th April, competing in his wheelchair.

Currently in his first year of the USW Community Football Coaching and Development degree programme, where he is studying for a foundation degree, Kalem began his journey in August of last year as a quiet and reserved young man, still finding his feet in a new environment. Though he remains soft-spoken, his confidence has grown tremendously over the course of his studies. Kalem has expanded his understanding of football coaching, delving deeper into the theory and practical skills required in the field. Recently, he has become much more confident in his ability to communicate with others and take the lead in coaching sessions, whether at university or during his placement at a local primary school. In fact, he has noticed that the pupils respond well to him, engaging with his coaching style and showing positive reactions to his guidance. This growth has been a rewarding part of his journey, and Kalem is excited to continue building on his skills and making a positive impact on those he works with.

Reflecting on his experience in the course, Kalem shared:
""I feel like it is going well, the way it is been delivered, I'm learning a lot from and how to be a coach."

Sue Lindley, Secondary Schools and Further Education Lead, highlighted Kalem’s growth in confidence on the course:
"He has really come out of his shell, he's communicating more with us, really engaged with the tasks."

This month, Kalem will take on the incredible challenge of competing in a virtual London Marathon around East Park in Hull, an exciting and physically demanding event, as he competes in support of the Tigers Trust while proudly representing Hull City by wearing their colours. To ensure he’s fully prepared, Kalem has been training diligently each week, both on the track and by using a road roller treadmill, which helps him build stamina and endurance. Along with his training, he has been following a carefully structured fitness plan, along with a high-protein diet, to fuel his body for peak performance. With hard work, dedication, and the support of his community, Kalem is eagerly anticipating the big day, ready to give his all and make his city proud.

Speaking about his participation in the virtual London marathon, Kalem said:

"I wanted to challenge myself, and see what it would be like doing bigger events, I've been training for 3 months, it will be my first proper event."

Sue expressed her surprise and admiration when she learned about Kalem’s ambitious goal:

"I was really surprised, i know he does racing and trains on his racing chair , I had no idea he would aim this high, I'm so proud, I'm absolutely over the moon, he's a really determined character, i saw this right from last summer when he was applying for the course."

During the event, Kalem is proudly raising money for the Tigers Trust, who highlights what the Trust means to him:

"Community can give so much to you, it's nice to finally give something back to the community, representing them will be a big thing because they inspire you and hopefully by doing this I can give them a bit of inspiration."

We are so proud of you, Kalem - you are an inspiration!
