During EFL Week of Action, we’re proud to highlight Ben’s inspiring journey, a powerful example of how opportunity, dedication, and the right support can pave a meaningful pathway through our education programmes, leading to real personal and professional growth.

Ben’s journey with Tigers Trust began in September 2021 when he enrolled on the University of South Wales’ Football Coaching and Development degree programme, delivered in partnership with Tigers Trust and EFL in the Community. Drawn by the qualifications and the hands-on mentoring, Ben committed himself fully to the course. Over the past few years, he has worked tirelessly, graduated with pride, and earned a full-time role at the Trust.

Reflecting on his experience, Ben shared how the small group learning environment made a lasting impact. “One of the major things which stood out was the small groups. Working in a big lecture hall with other people is a lot more challenging, whereas working with small groups gives you more time with your mentors.” He also praised the accessibility of Tigers Trust coaches: “Any questions I had could go straight to them, but elsewhere I would have to root around to find the answer.”

Ben’s development wasn’t limited to the classroom. He dedicated over 750 hours to volunteering, gaining invaluable experience in the coaching industry and growing both personally and professionally. “Experience is everything,” he said. “If you’ve got experience in some sort of subject, you’ll be able to progress in what you want to do.”

The USW degree programme also offered unique opportunities, including matchday experiences and access to professional environments. “The major one was training ground visits to meet the players, meet the coaching staff, see what they do on a daily basis, and also being around the MKM Stadium… All these things you wouldn’t get anywhere else.”

A standout moment in Ben’s journey was a fully funded one-month placement in Italy. “During the week, we worked Monday to Friday in sports and football camps and also had the chance to gain experience in a gym setting,” he recalled. “After our work placements each day, we had free time to explore the area… It was an unforgettable experience that helped build both my professional skills and my confidence.”

After graduating in Cardiff, Ben celebrated alongside other students on the course, a proud moment marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Ben now works as an Education Delivery Officer at Tigers Trust, delivering the Premier League Inspires programme in secondary schools and helping young people develop key life skills through sport and education.

Ben’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when passion meets opportunity. We’re incredibly proud of his achievements and excited to see the impact he’ll continue to make.
