Clubs across the EFL have been showcasing the prominent role and values they bring to their local communities. During the EFL’s annual Week of Action (18-22 November), Hull City and Tigers Trust have been showing their collective impact.

18th November

On the first day of EFL Week of Action 2024, Carl Rushworth and Steven Alzate visited the University of Hull as the Trust hosted the Utilita Girls Cup Group Two Qualifiers.

The Utilita Girls Cup is a seven-a-side competition for U13 girls in Years 7 and 8, culminating in a grand final held just before the EFL Trophy Final at Wembley Stadium. The journey to the finals begins with each EFL club organizing a local competition for schools eager to participate.

We were delighted to welcome twelve teams from secondary schools including Snaith, Driffield, Sirius Academy North, Newland, Malet Lambert, Holderness Academy, South Hunsley, and St Mary’s College. Some schools even brought two teams, showcasing the enthusiasm for the event.

All teams competed in a league format, delivering thrilling matches filled with brilliant goals, outstanding saves by goalkeepers, and remarkable displays of teamwork.

On the second day, we shined a spotlight on their Tigers Pathways Exploring Volunteering programme and its invaluable role in supporting individuals through life transitions.

Launched three years ago, the Tigers Pathways Exploring Volunteering programme is a FREE six-week programme designed to help participants navigate significant life changes. It focuses on setting goals, creating actionable plans, fostering healthy lifestyles, and cultivating a positive mindset. With a strong emphasis on volunteering, the programme also offers tailored support to help participants move closer to employment opportunities.

The current cohort gathered at the MKM Stadium for a classroom session to set meaningful personal goals and develop SMART objectives, all while exploring effective strategies to nurture self-care and well-being, before attending Hollywood Bowl to strengthen teamwork and enhance communication.

The third day of EFL Week of Action saw ex-City legends John Hawley and Dennis Booth attend our regular Disability Walking Football session

Held every Wednesday from 10 to 11am, these inclusive sessions are specifically designed for individuals aged 18 and over with additional needs or disabilities.

As the name suggests, Disability Walking Football is a modified version of the traditional game where players walk instead of run. This creates a more relaxed and less physically demanding experience. The popularity of the programme is evident, with over 30 attendees each week since its introduction in April.

Following the session, the group gathered in the café area for the usual post-game routine of hot drinks and biscuits. However, this week featured an added treat: a fantastic exhibition from the Trust’s ‘Forever Tigers’ memorabilia project, supported by the Premier League Fans Fund. The display included iconic shirts worn by Hull City legends, an array of collected match programmes, and unique collector’s items.

To conclude the day, participants took part in a Christmas-themed competition inspired by the memorabilia collection. Each person designed their own Hull City-themed Christmas card based off retro programmes and shirts, with the winner set to receive a special prize soon.

The fourth day saw players Ryan Longman and Regan Slater visit the MKM Stadium to meet a group of students enrolled on the Trust’s Bishop Burton BTEC Level 1 course.

The BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Vocational Studies (Pathways in Sports), delivered in partnership with Bishop Burton College, offers a hands-on learning experience tailored for young people aged 16-18. This programme is designed to support students who have faced challenges with traditional academic subjects, enabling them to pursue their passion for sports while opening doors to a successful career.

Students spend two days of face-to-face learning at the Tigers Trust Arena and one day at Bishop Burton College. The course covers essential topics in sports while also helping students improve their English and Maths skills. Participants also enjoy several benefits, including a free Hull City season pass, a Hull City training kit, and complimentary transport to the college.

Ryan Longman and Regan Slater added excitement as they shared how teamwork is essential both on and off the pitch. Students applied this lesson during a lively team-building activity, constructing the tallest tower using jelly babies and spaghetti. The players also shared personal stories about overcoming challenges in their careers, emphasising the importance of unity and collaboration in achieving success. The session concluded with a dynamic Q&A, where students eagerly participated, displaying their enthusiasm before snapping some selfies with the players.

Concluding the EFL Week of Action, the Trust were thrilled to host 10 schools from their Premier League Inspires programme for a Year 7 and 8 girls’ five-a-side football tournament at the Tigers Trust Arena. Some schools even fielded multiple teams, adding to the excitement of the day.

The Premier League Inspires programme, funded by the Premier League Charitable Fund since 2019, is a secondary school initiative that supports students facing challenges such as low confidence, self-esteem, attendance, or social skills. At Tigers Trust, this project plays a vital role in helping students unlock their potential.
