Through the Tigers Trust education programmes, young people on our Degree Programme have gained incredible opportunities, including coaching experience overseas.
One example in Ben Hollingworth, who has been studying on the Trust’s Community Football Coaching and Development degree programme, delivered in collaboration with the University of South Wales and EFL in the Community, since August 2023. He has fully embraced the course, actively participating in both academic and practical elements. His involvement in our football provision has provided him with valuable, hands-on coaching experience.
In January, we were pleased to welcome Challenger Sports to the Tigers Trust Arena. Their visit offered a fantastic opportunity to assess students from our degree programme, with the potential for them to secure coaching placements in the USA and Canada - an exciting step and a once in a lifetime experience for personal development.
Ben has now started his first week in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, coaching with Challenger Sports over the summer. This new and dynamic environment is not only helping him enhance his coaching skills but is also providing unique experiences beyond the football pitch.
Reflecting on his experience so far, Ben shared:
“This first week has been amazing. I am directing a camp and leading a group of other coaches. I can already see how beneficial this experience will be for me and other USW students—getting consistent coaching hours and building my confidence. I would recommend this to anyone, and I’ll be encouraging other students to take this opportunity next year.”
Richard Dexter, Head of Business and Operations, added:
“We’re proud to be working in partnership with Challenger Sports. This opportunity goes far beyond football - it’s about creating life-changing experiences. By working together, we’re enabling our post-16 students to grow in confidence, develop professionally, and gain valuable life experience in the USA and Canada. The feedback so far has been outstanding, and we would encourage other CCOs to support their learners in accessing similar opportunities.”
Looking ahead to September, we’re excited to launch a new opportunity through our BTEC Level 2 and Level 3 Sport courses, in partnership with League Football Education (LFE). These practical programmes are tailored for young people passionate about sport, coaching, and fitness. Whether you're seeking an alternative to traditional college pathways, want elite coaching and competitive football, or aim to study in a professional sports environment, this course can provide exceptional experiences—including visits to the finest football venues and even opportunities like Ben’s trip to the USA.
