A Tigers Trust participant’s story of resilience is helping football fans start the year with a smile.

Eleven-year-old Alfie Allen, a regular at the Tigers Trust Premier League Kicks disability sessions, says the programme has boosted his confidence and given him “an opportunity to be myself.”

His journey is being highlighted as part of Scan to Smile, a new EFL initiative aimed at lifting spirits during the January blues while celebrating the life-changing work delivered by football club charities across the country.

The Tigers Trust has run the Premier League Kicks programme since 2010, engaging thousands of young people in a wide range of multisport activities. This includes the Premier League Kicks Inclusion sessions, which provide tailored and accessible opportunities for 8‑ to 18‑year‑olds with additional needs, ensuring every participant can take part in a truly inclusive and welcoming environment.

When Alfie first joined the sessions at the Tigers Trust Arena in March 2024, he arrived feeling extremely shy and anxious. Travelling from the other side of the Humber meant he didn’t know anyone, and he initially found it difficult to speak to staff or other participants as he adjusted to a completely new environment.

Since then, Alfie has attended more than 100 sessions and has made outstanding progress. His confidence has grown significantly; he now takes part fully in every activity, interacts with other participants, and has built new friendships. He has also become comfortable approaching staff independently for support, no longer needing his dad by his side, and always makes sure to greet each team member on arrival.

Alfie has overcome his fear of joining new groups or unfamiliar settings and no longer feels pressured by peers, something he previously struggled with due to past negative experiences linked to his disabilities. He now feels welcomed, included, and free to express himself in what he proudly calls his “Tigers Trust Team.”

Reflecting on his journey, Alfie said: “Before I got involved with the Tigers Trust two years ago, I felt like I struggled joining teams in my age group. When I first started attending the sessions, I began playing lots of sports, from football to basketball, and it helped me feel more confident.”

He added: “I am so grateful for Tigers Trust for helping me because they have been so welcoming, and I have loved being part of the Tigers Trust team.”

Posters displayed around the MKM Stadium shared Alfie’s inspiring story and encouraged supporters to scan QR codes, which also appeared on-screen ahead of the match. Fans could use these codes to unlock uplifting stories like Alfie’s, showcasing how sport changes lives far beyond the pitch.

Ahead of Hull City’s game against Swansea City, Alfie was presented with a signed Hull City shirt to celebrate his incredible journey.

Trevor Birch, Chief Executive at the EFL said: “Scan to Smile is about harnessing the power of football to lift spirits and share real stories of hope. Behind every Club there are people whose lives have been positively changed through the work and dedication of their local EFL Club charity. This initiative gives supporters the chance to see that impact firsthand and reminds us that football truly is a force for good.”
