Hull City’s Tigers Trust Premier league 4 sport project enjoyed a successful Badminton competition on Sunday 5th February at The Hull Badminton Centre. Although the snowfall on the Saturday night did not help in preparations the competition still saw a great turn out.
Children from the programmes four school clubs took part in the grass roots tournament which saw many players competing for the first time.
The morning competition was held for the under 12 age group . No under 12’s girls competition was run.
The current clubs run at St. Marys, Malet Lambert, South Hunsley and Beverley High School. This years tournament was open up to accommodate players from other schools who may be potential players at the Tigers Trust clubs.
The Premier League 4 Sport project is an initiative that sees Football Clubs link up with local sports clubs to help attract young people to take up one of the following Olympic sports, badminton, judo, table tennis, Netball and volleyball. Each Football club is linked to a community sport clubs (Hub Club) which have developed 4 satellite Clubs. In total the project in Hull has developed 16 new sports clubs around the region. The project has seen some great success over the last two years and because of this has been given a further two year funding period to take it pre and post the Olympic year.
The afternoon session saw the U15’s competition take place and a healthy 28 children registered.
The quality of the play was at times very good to say that this was the first time the players had, had that competition type play before. Matt Conway, Hull City’s Tigers Trust Premier League 4 Sport Co-ordinator said “The competition was designed so that is was attractive to the very grass roots players. There were players here that had only picked up a racket 4 weeks ago. The great thing about the Premier League 4 sport project is that anyone can have a go and take part in days like today and with the Olympic only a few months away it will hopefully ignite the children’s imagination. The coaches have worked extremely hard in making the project a success and we can take some big positives out of today”.

Roger Tanner the tournament co-ordinator and coach at the Malet Lambert school club was pleased with the response the children had. “It can be a difficult situation for a young player to enter a competition as it has different pressures to club practises. It provides a stepping stone for young players wishing to compete, but not yet in a Badminton England affiliated club and to showcase the junior club opportunities to players and parents.”
