What Does it Include?

The main part of the project involves five school visits by our dedicated Community Health Team.

  • Five one hour interactive classroom based sessions using visual teaching aids and a colourful booklet full of interesting tasks and facts. They include both individual and group work tasks, with take home activities which could include other family members.
  • Five one hour practical sessions focusing on physical development; co-ordination, agility, speed and endurance. The aim is to develop a skill which in turn builds up confidence to take up extra sports and leisure opportunities. To achieve a successful outcome the coaches endeavour to motivate the children by providing a positive experience – fun, challenging and rewarding!
  • Five one hour after school sessions (optional for the children) during which the children will sample a variety of sporting activities. The aim of engaging the children's interest in a particular sport and following take up additional opportunities to participate.
  • One KC Stadium visit (4-6 weeks following the schools visits) is the final part of the schools programme. This visit will comprise of a tour, role play tasks in the media suite and presentation of certificates in the changing room with a player (if available) or Roary the Tiger.

Evaluation

Being fully funded, it is essential that we evaluate our impact, so therefore we value the support of the school and the role it plays in making this programme a success. This is important for the sustainability of the project.

Here are some examples of additional positive outcomes:

School Presentations

The class or small group involved in the project show case what they have learnt, they will try to inspire and motivate others to make positive lifestyle changes. This will be lead by the teacher. We will attempt to film all presentations and subject to receiving written consent, show then on our website.

School Displays

Another opportunity for the class to show case the work they have done, ideally these will be in a prominent place.

Sustainability

We would like to see the provision of a regular after school sports club taken on board by the school. Although the majority will already have something in place, we will support the training of new or existing staff and volunteers that want to or do organise clubs.

Parental / carer involvement

If possible we would like to engage parents and carers in the project. We could ask the schools permission to hold an event specifically for them (after school subject to availability).

Holiday Courses

Every child that participates in a schools programme will have free access to our Fit to Play Holiday Courses. We ask schools to help with the promotion of these activities.

The project has been up and running since April 2009 and the response from the schools who have participated has been excellent.
