Enterprise Academy

Enterprise Academy aims to “inspire and challenge” students to think about business using Hull City as a real example that they can relate to and understand.

The Premier League has been working with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) for some time. Middlesbrough Football Club has led the way for many years, and the positive outcome and evaluations have encouraged the government to expand the programme to other clubs.

Thanks to local support from Yorkshire Forward, YPEF and Hull City Council, we and Hull FC have been able to develop our own Academy. It was officially launched by Regional Business Minister Rosie Winterton.

Funding has enabled us to provide 300 Year Nine students the opportunity to gain an accredited Oxford and Cambridge RSA (OCR) qualification in Business and Enterprise during this and the next academic year.

The programme has been up and running since September. Now open to every school in East Yorkshire, we have been overwhelmed by the tremendous response.

The Enterprise Academy features a ten module course, approximately ten hours for completion. The arrangements are made to suit school timetables e.g., single or double sessions. The programme culminates in a celebration and KC Stadium tour. Schools are using this course to retain the interest of capable learners and engage the interest of pupils who are under performing. Depending on the students level of attainment, the programme can suit years 8 to 11.

Mrs Winterton, joined by Hull City’s Nick Barmby, took part in a business session at the KC Stadium launch.

“Enterprise has the power to inspire young people and create a ‘can do’ culture something which is key to the UK’s future economic climate. Using football and rugby club examples, this Enterprise Academy will teach young people how to manage a budget, raise finance and look after customers – essential skills for any young entrepreneur.”

- Mrs Winterton

“I am very pleased to be involved in Hull’s Enterprise Academy, working with colleagues at Hull FC, and I am very supportive of its aims of showing young people the importance of the clubs as a business and an employer. That is why I am pleased to be its enterprise champion.”
